Diriyah Public Realm.
Creation DESCRIPTION.
Located in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, this mixed-use development brings together commercial, educational, retail and F&B destinations within an integrated urban environment. The Public Realm Landscape forms a defining component of the masterplan, establishing a connected network of pedestrian-focused spaces that encourage interaction, enhance accessibility and create a distinctive sense of place rooted in the surrounding natural Landscape.
The Landscape designed seeked to implement a sequence of intimate internal streets that guide pedestrians through the development, connecting individual buildings and destinations before opening into generous Landscaped plazas. This transition between enclosed, human-scaled streets and expansive public spaces creates a varied spatial experience, encouraging exploration and supporting the diverse activities associated with the development's mixed-use programme.
The Landscape plazas act as the primary social and recreational destinations within the masterplan, providing flexible spaces for gathering, relaxation and public activity. Water features introduce movement and sensory interest, while dedicated performance spaces create opportunities for cultural events, informal entertainment and engagement. Feature native planting provides structure, seasonal character and a strong visual connection to the regional environment, helping to establish a landscape identity that responds to Riyadh's distinctive climate and natural context.
A key consideration throughout the design was the relationship between the public realm and the surrounding Wadi Landscape. The plazas were carefully conceived to capture and celebrate iconic views towards the existing Wadi and its natural landforms, integrating these defining features into the everyday experience of the development. The Landscape therefore extends beyond the boundaries of the built environment, creating visual and experiential connections with the wider natural setting.
